Feeding
I feed my hamsters a handful of good quality hamster mix, such as Harry Hamster every day. To this I add extra sunflower hearts, pumpkin seeds, linseed and wheatgerm from the health food shop.
My hamsters also enjoy bread and milk, porridge, rice pudding and some of the pasta Heinz baby foods. Young, elderly or sick hamsters will especially benefit from these. There is some debate as to whether hamsters should be fed ordinary milk or a lactose free variety such as kitten milk. I use ordinary milk but there are good quality animal milks available in the petshop if you prefer.
Hamsters are not herbivore and will appreciate small pieces of chicken, small amounts of dried kitten food, scambled egg and cheese.
My hamsters also enjoy cooked pasta and vegetables. Make sure not to feed anything with garlic or onion in it though because these will make your hamster ill.
Other treats can include raisens, millet spray and hamster treats from the petshop.
Hamsters will also appreciate some fresh vegetables and fruit although I would avoid citrus fruits. I feed fruit and vegetables cautiously because too much can cause diarrhoea.
Remember that a hamster is very small, feed tiny amounts of the above foods, varying things from day to day.
